ABSTRACT

In recent years, millets have surged in popularity due to their nutritional richness, environmental sustainability, and cultural significance. This article explores policy initiatives aimed at promoting millets, focusing on government support, policy frameworks, and the roles of NGOs and the private sector. Governments globally, including India, have acknowledged millets' potential to address food security and malnutrition. Initiatives like India's National Mission for Protein Supplements (NMPS) provide financial assistance and infrastructure support to farmers. State-level schemes, such as Karnataka's Siridhanya Yojana and Telangana's Millets Mission, incentivize millet cultivation through subsidies and technical aid. Policy support is crucial for encouraging millet cultivation and strengthening value chains. Minimum Support Price (MSP) systems ensure fair prices for farmers, while government procurement schemes stabilize markets and enhance access. Investments in processing infrastructure and input subsidies further support millet value chains and farmer livelihoods. NGOs and the private sector complement government efforts by promoting sustainable practices and driving innovation. Organizations like ICRISAT collaborate with farmers, researchers, and governments to develop improved millet varieties and strengthen market linkages. The private sector contributes to product diversification and market expansion, catering to the rising demand for healthy foods.
